FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- The driver charged in a hit-and-run crash that killed two British businessmen last year has been arrested.
Ryan Levin had been expected to turn himself in to face two counts of vehicular manslaughter in connection with the high-speed crash on A1A in Fort Lauderdale. But officers arrested him on Tuesday after an anonymous phone call led them to the Points of America building, 2200 South Ocean Lane.
He was taken into custody and booked into Broward County's main jail. On Wednesday, he appeared before a Broward County judge and was charged with two counts of vehicular homicide and two counts of leaving the scene of an accident that caused death.
Levin, who has prior driving violations in his home state of Illinois, was also charged with violating his probation. Although the judge issued bond, Levin was placed on a "no bond" hold as his attorney worked to sift through the prior case and to possibly help his client avoid extradition.
Police said Craig Elford and Keith Watkinson were sitting ducks when they were hit by a speeding Porsche as they walked along A1A near Las Olas Boulevard in Feb. 2009.
According to the arrest affidavits, Levin, the son of a wealthy Chicago family, was racing another car at the time of the crash.
Using cell phone records, detectives determined that after the crash, he met up with 39-year-old Derek Cook. Police said Cook took the damaged Porsche and abandoned it on I-95.
Cook was arrested and released on $8,500 bond. Local 10 found him at home in Tamarac Tuesday night.
"Sorry, no comment,” he said before he slammed the door.
Levin could face up to 30 years in prison if convicted on both manslaughter counts.
