BSO: Thieves Steal From Dead Man

1 Arrested, 2 Sought In Burglary

The Broward Sheriff's Office is searching for two people they said stole from a dead man.

According to the Broward Sheriff's Office, 20-year-old Anthony Defalle went to the home of his neighbor, 59-year-old Raymond Barkey, on Saturday or Sunday and discovered Barkey's body inside the apartment.

Instead of calling authorities, Defalle called a couple of friends and they burglarized the home, with Barkey's body still lying inside, investigators said. The group stole a safe, weapons and Barkey's truck, according to police.

“That’s a brand new low. I can’t even imagine somebody robbing the dead," said neighbor Joe Johnson.

Raymond Barkey.
Raymond Barkey was a decorated war hero.

“This world’s crazy. People are going to rob a man after he’s dead?" said Brian Getty, who lives next door to the apartment where Barkey's body was found.

According to neighbors, Barkey, a retired Marine and Vietnam war veteran, was well-liked in his neighborhood. He was awarded two Purple Hearts in the military and won the respect of his neighbors during the 15 years he lived on Southwest 28th Terrace.

“He’s been on this block longer than the block has been here," neighbor Kimberly Brooks told Local 10's Roger Lohse.

Deputies conducting a welfare check at Barkey's home found his body on Monday. Police said the medical examiner has not yet determined the cause of death, but investigators do not suspect foul play.

A tip called in to Crime Stoppers led police to Defalle who was arrested on Wednesday. Police are searching for at least two accomplices. Barkey's truck, a red 2006 Ford F-150, is still missing.

A reward of up to $1,000 is being offered for information leading to an arrest. Anyone with information is asked to call Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS (8477).
