MIAMI -- A judge on Friday dismissed Michelle Spence-Jones' civil lawsuit against Gov. Charlie Crist over her suspension from the Miami Commission.
Until recently, the judge had seemed inclined to side with Spence-Jones, possibly ready to void her suspension from her Miami Commission seat. Spence-Jones filed the lawsuit after Crist suspended her from the commission for a second time after she was charged with grand theft.
Then, Spence-Jones was arrested a second time earlier this month, prompting the judge to decide the lawsuit against her suspension is moot.
"The people lost because, for whatever reason, the governor of the state of Florida felt that their voice was not important," Spence-Jones said.
The governor first suspended Spence-Jones last fall after her initial arrest on the grand theft charge, just after she won reelection. Two months later, fully aware voters elected Spence-Jones again in a special election. The governor suspended her a second time.
Spence-Jones claimed the governor trumped the will of the people.
Earlier this month, a Miami-Dade County grand jury indicted Spence-Jones on new and separate bribery charges. At that time, the governor issued an order supporting the suspension.
"So long as the bribery indictment is there, regardless of the motivation, regardless of the validity, it still prevents her from holding office," said Spence-Jones' attorney, Dennis Bedard.
"For me, I'm at peace. I'm at peace because I know, in the end, that justice will prevail." Spence-Jones said.
Bedard said an appeal is unlikely.
