BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. -- Would you be interested in a product that claims it can translate what your dog is saying woof for woof? There is one out there and Channel 10 Problem Solver Mark Schumacher couldn't resist putting the Bowlingual device to the test.
The device is pretty simple to use. You put a small transmitter on your pooch's collar. Then you fire up the receiver. The receiver will give the dog's owner a text interpretation of what the dog is presumably trying to communicate.
Bowlingual associates cute phrases to each bark to describe mood. The makers claim it is the result of extensive study of different breeds in different situations and their different barks.
Schumacher asked Tim Mullally, a dog-training expert, to test it, and he came up with a good plan. He tried it on his own dog Cody (pictured, right) because as a trainer he knows what the dog wants.
When Mullally first used Bowlingual, it told him that Cody was telling him he's gorgeous and that he felt great.
The Mullally decided to tie Cody to a tree, because he doesn't like to be alone, and then see what he might say. When Mullally tied the dog up and took a few steps away, Cody barked. Bowlingual interpreted the bark as saying, "I love you."
"This really seems accurate with what he's feeling," Mullally said.
Still not convinced, Mullally and Schumacher took Cody inside.
When a worker banged on window, Cody became agitated and began barking. Bowlingual interpreted his barks as meaning, "I can't figure it out" and it said he was frustrated.
"Amazingly accurate," Mullally said. "That's the one thing that surprised me. It was really pretty accurate."
Despite it's perceived accuracy, Schumacher talked to a few dog owners who didn't necessarily fell like shelling out $120 for Bowlingual.
While it might be a fun toy or gadget, Schumacher says he really doesn't think a dog owner needs it to know what his or her dog is thinking.
