MIAMI -- Dozens of illegal immigrants working on exclusive Fisher Island were intercepted and arrested Tuesday morning.

Coast Guard and a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement vessels intercepted a barge used to transport workers to and from the island.
ICE agents said one or more employers were disregarding immigration laws and hired individuals unauthorized to work in the United States. The 45 people arrested held a variety of jobs, including construction, landscaping, and building maintenance.
The investigation leading to the arrests was the third such operation in Miami in recent months that targeted employers who hire illegal immigrants to work in secure areas.
If it is determined that an employer had knowledge of illegal workers, that employer could be fined up to $10,000 per illegal worker.
The 45 people arrested Tuesday will appear in an immigration court on charges of being in the United States illegally. They are being detained at the Krome Detention Center.
