Lobster Heist May Sink Local Seafood Business
Company May Go Out Of Business Because Of Robbery
POSTED: Wednesday, January 7,
MIAMI -- Feeling that they were not getting enough response from police, the owners of a seafood packing company that was robbed Nov. 11 hired a private detection and caught the alleged robber themselves.

At least one robber cut a hole through a wall into Flamingo Seafood in November and stole 15,000 pounds of lobster valued at $275,000.
The theft happened during the week of the Free Trade Area of the Americas conference in Miami, and the owners of the seafood company said that when they called 9-1-1, police did not respond because of FTAA.
The business owners said that all the leads and suspects came from their own investigator, and in the end led to the arrest of Jesus Aguila, of Miami Springs, who the investigator said was selling the lobster. Police were only able to recover $24,000 worth of lobster when they arrested Aguila.
Owner Charlie Watson said since Flamingo doesn't own the product -- they just process and pack seafood for other three other companies -- the robbery has badly hurt four businesses in total.
The owners of Flamingo Seafood said that the company may be going out of business after 30 years because they did not have insurance to cover the losses. They have gone from 25 to one employee since the theft.
To make up for the loss, Flamingo is selling what little seafood they have left to the public at wholesale prices.
