MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. -- Immigration officials are explaining why they must send a South Florida family back to Peru.

Right now, Lourdes Sandivar has to wear an ankle bracelet at home while her husband, Jose, is being held at Krome Detention Center. They came to Miami in 1993 and were denied political asylum, but Jose was given a work permit until 2003.
Now they've been ordered back to Peru, even though their two children (pictured) were born in South Florida and are U.S. citizens. Immigration official John Mata said the couple tried to hide from them.
"Mr. and Mrs. Sandivar have been afforded due process of the immigration court system as any other person would be," Mata said.
The INS now considers the couple a flight risk.
