PEMBROKE PINES, Fla. -- It's not just the temperatures that have been on the rise in South Florida lately, gas prices are also creeping upward.

"It's starting to hit the pocket pretty hard," said one customer.
While the annual influx of snowbirds often drives up prices with increased demand, it is a recent shipwreck (pictured) that blocked the mouth of the Mississippi River that has contributed to this increase.
"We couldn't get any product down here and when you can't get product the only thing you can do to try and stop the influx is (raise) the price," said gas station owner Tom Carter.
The average price for a gallon of gas in South Florida is $1.71. The average price statewide is $1.68, which is up significantly from October when it was only $1.44.
