NORTH MIAMI, Fla. -- A tribute to a friend turned into a blaze that ripped through a North Miami Beach apartment building Wednesday.
Dozens of residents were forced to evacuate at 16450 N.E. Miami Drive when apartment 601 became an inferno. The woman living there, Carol Havelin, had lit a candle for good luck for a sick friend then fell asleep.
The candle sparked a blaze that damaged five apartments. Havelin was rescued by firefighters.
"The entired apartment was black smoke. You couldn't see in there. But she was right inside the doorway. She was confused and dazed and wasn't walking out immediately," said
Everyone else in the building also managed to get out safely.
