Police: Dead Student's Blood Found On Classmate's Clothes
DNA Evidence Backs Boy's Murder Confession
POSTED: Tuesday, June 15, 2004
MIAMI -- Police say there is more evidence that backs up the confession of a teenager who says he killed his classmate.
In evidence released Tuesday, investigators said that DNA evidence show Jaime Gough's blood was found on a jacket and a sneaker belonging to Michael Hernandez, the boy who confessed to killing Gough.
Police said they also found Gough's blood on a pocket knife and latex gloves found in Hernandez's backpack, and on a paper towel and the handicapped stall where the victim bled to death. Gough died of more than 40 wounds to his neck, face and hands before classes Feb. 3 at Southwood Middle School.
Hernandez faces a mandatory life prison sentence if he is convicted, since he is being tried as an adult for first-degree murder.
Hernandez's attorney, Richard Rosenbaum, is pursuing an insanity defense.
Police said the bloody knife was found "inside a hidden area" in one of the backpack's compartments, a crime scene investigator wrote in a report two days after the killing.
Michael confessed the night of the killing but did not give a motive.
Wednesday there is a court hearing in which the judge will hear confidential reports on Hernandez's competency, to determine if he is able to understand the legal proceedings and help with the defense.
