Third Case Of Rabies Reported In Broward

Raccoon With Disease Second This Year

POSTED: Tuesday, October 19, 2004

The Florida Department of Health says a raccoon that attacked a dog earlier this week tested positive for rabies.

The raccoon reportedly attacked the dog on 131th Terrace in Davie. The dog killed the raccoon. Officials said the dog had a current rabies vaccination so it is being kept under quarantine at its home.

This is the third rabies case in 2004 and the 28th animal infected with rabies found in Broward County since July 2000, according to health officials.

The previous case of rabies, confirmed on Sept. 18 was a raccoon that had contact with a dog in Coconut Creek.

This is the second rabies case reported in Davie this year. The first rabies case in Davie occurred on March 15, when a raccoon had contact with a dog.

Animal Care officers are checking on the rabies vaccination and licensing of cats and dogs. Officers issue warnings to pet owners who do not have current rabies vaccinations and license tags for their pets, giving them 30 days to have their pets vaccinated and licensed.

Failure to comply within the 30-day period will result in a $110 citation for each animal.

Officers are increasing their surveillance of the area and impounding any stray cat or dog.

Officials warn residents to avoid contact with wild animals, even ones that appear healthy. Special care should be taken to avoid any animals that appear to be ill or are acting strangely.

Anyone who is bitten or scratched should immediately clean the wound with soap and water and seek medical attention.
