South Florida meteorologist Bill Kamal made his first court appearance today on charges of soliciting sex with a minor over the weekend.

Police arrested the WSVN weatherman in Fort Pierce Sunday after investigators said he drove to a convenience store there to meet a 14-year-old boy he had been chatting with on the Internet.

That boy turned out to be an undercover cop. Detectives said Kamal admitted driving to meet the boy, but said he didn't intend to have sex with him, only to be a father figure to him.

Police said they found two condoms inside Kamal's car.

WSVN fired Kamal Monday.

Do you think it's fair to fire an employee before he or she has had a trial?

Investigation Began With Internet Chat

The investigation began Oct. 18 when the detective, posing as a child in an Internet chat room, received an instant message from a screen name identified later connected to Kamal.

Following a series of instant messages, e-mails and telephone calls between Kamal and the detective, Kamal told the "child" he would come to St. Lucie County Sunday to meet the "child," police said.

The investigators are members of the Law Enforcement Against Child Harm (LEACH) task force that includes: St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office, Broward Sheriff's Office, Fort Lauderdale Police Department, Metro-Dade Police Department and the Office of Immigration and Customs Enforcement of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

Investigators armed with search warrants have seized computers at Kamal's Miami Beach home and his Fort Lauderdale apartment.

It is expected that the U.S. Attorney's Office will file federal charges against Kamal.
