PERRINE, Fla. -- The NAACP is calling for an investigation into the shooting death of a man who family members say was mentally ill.
Miami-Dade County police officer John Saavedra shot Randy Baker in the head last Sunday after police say Baker hit a female officer with her own baton.
"The fact that he is mentally ill does not automatically preclude the officer from using deadly force as a resource to deal with the mentally ill person," said Miami-Dade County Police Director Robert Parker.
According to police, Saavedra's file reports that he underwent special training to work with mentally ill suspects.
