FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- A group of migrants landed a rickety raft on Fort Lauderdale Beach this morning.
About 10 migrants, wrapped in yellow tarps, huddled on the beach shortly after landing near 4040 Galt Ocean Drive. Rescue workers surrounded the group as Sky 10 flew overhead.
Condo residents called police around daybreak after spotting a raft jammed with people offshore.
The group told Local 10's Julie Summers they've been at sea for 10 days. When they left Santa Cruz, Cuba, they had high hopes. But soon, their engine failed. Later they lost most of their food and water when their flimsy craft flipped. They said they used oranges to catch fish, then soaked their catch in orange juice and vinegar to eat it raw.
The men were cold and hungry when they finally came ashore. They pointed out blisters on their hands they said were from days of rowing their homemade oars.
A small raft that appeared to be made of pontoons and planks of wood was beached near the group.
Police at one point thought the men may have been dropped off near shore by a larger boat. Coast Guard and police vessels launched a search offshore for a smuggling craft.
