MIAMI -- A longtime South Florida television weatherman pleaded guilty Friday to arranging a sexual liaison with someone he thought was a 14-year-old boy.
Under the deal, Bill Kamal will serve at least five years in prison.
Kamal and prosecutors entered the plea before a federal judge in Miami. Local 10's Michael Putney was in court when Kamal entered the plea. Putney said Kamal was remarkably cheerful, waving and smiling at those in court.
Federal agents say Kamal tried to set up a meeting with a boy during a series of discussions over the phone and Internet. Kamal was arrested Oct. 24 when he showed up to meet the boy named "Billy" at a strip mall. Billy was actually a St. Lucie sheriff's detective.
Kamal is charged with one count of child enticement. He could be sentenced with a maximum penalty of 30 years in prison. He could also be fined up to $250,000 for the crime.
Kamal's attorney said Friday that his client is a "spiritual man" who believes in God, and who thinks that "out of every bad thing comes a good thing." He said Kamal is looking forward to "starting his life over."
Kamal will be sentenced in February.
