New Year's Eve Celebrations 2004

There are lots of big New Year's Eve celebrations in South Florida – many with no admission cost. Check the list below before you make your plans to ring in the New Year.

Miami-Dade County

The Big Orange Drop

For the 19th year, Miami hosts the South Florida version of Time Square's celebration with the "Big Orange."

The 35-foot neon orange climbs 400 feet to the top of the Hotel Intercontinental Miami at Chopin Plaza. The raising of the orange is followed by one of Florida's largest fireworks and laser shows.

The raising of the Big Orange starts at 9 p.m., with the orange moving up about 70 feet per hour until it reaches the top at midnight.

Bayfront Park's New Year's Eve

This annual downtown Miami New Year's Eve celebration features musical performances and a midnight fireworks display. This year's lineup includes salsa star Roberto Torres; Betty Padgett and the Elements of Funk; and reggae man Freddie McGregor.

Cost: Free
Time: Gates open at 7 p.m., show starts at 8 p.m, fireworks at midnight
Location: Bayfront Park Amphitheater, 301 N. Biscayne Blvd., Miami

Vizcaya

The Vizcayans host the annual all-adult New Year's celebration at the palatial estate. For guests over 21, there is a buffet dinner, dancing, a champagne toast at midnight and a fireworks display.

Cost: $150 per person
Time: 9 p.m. to 2 a.m.

Broward County

Las Olas Riverfront

Broward's biggest New Year's Eve celebration is at Las Olas Riverfront, with live music, drink and dinner specials, and a fireworks display at midnight.

The band The Bulldogs performs starting at 8 p.m. The fireworks display at midnight is sponsored by Dan Marino’s Fine Food & Spirits, Martini Bar, Mezzanotte and Ole Ole.

Monroe County

Conch Shell Drop

Key West celebrates New Year's Eve with its 12th Annual Dropping of the Conch Shell at midnight.

Huge crowds gather in the streets Sloppy Joe's bar starting around 10 p.m. in anticipation of the conch drop. Inside, there is dancing, a performance by the Benders, part favors and beads.

At midnight, the sky is filled with confetti, streamers and lights as the conch shell is lowered.

Cost: Free, No reservations (Door charge to go inside)
