MIAMI -- Rescuers saved a mother manatee and its baby that were stuck in a storm drain in the middle of a Miami parking lot Tuesday.
The mother and her baby had been stuck in the drain since at least Monday. Rescuers said the manatees had traveled through a series of pipes that decreased in size until they reached one that was just too narrow for them to keep going forward.
Tuesday morning rescuers were able to get the 400-pound baby out. The big baby was kept quiet and wet inside a nearby truck while workers continued to try to save the mother.
Sometime after noon, rescuers pulled the 1,000-pound mother out too.
The mother and baby were tagged and released in the Miami River.
The pair attracted quite a few onlookers and a good bit of media attention during their involuntary stay beneath the Miami Veteran's Adminstration Hospital parking lot. Sky 10 flew over the scene Tuesday morning for a look of its own today and spotted the mother at the bottom of the drain.
It appears that the manatees entered the storm drain system via the nearby Wagner Creek, which connects to Biscayne Bay.
Members of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission, the Miami Seaquarium and water and sewer workers took part in the rescue.
