North Carolina police are holding a man in connection to the murder of Boca Raton nanny Monica Rivera-Veldizen.

Now, Boca Raton police are asking for help from the public to place Jerry Wiggins, 28, in the area at the time of her death.

Police said Wiggins is linked to Rivera-Veldizen's murder through DNA. He was arrested Wednesday for allegedly raping a woman in Charlotte, N.C. Officials said DNA from that crime matches DNA from the murder.

Police are hoping someone will confirm that Wiggins was in South Florida in January 2004.

"This is the guy that we believe did it. If you've seen him, if you've been involved with him, if he did handy work for you, if you saw him at a mall, wherever you had contact with him, we need to know that information," said a Boca Raton police official.

Nanny's Murder

Rivera-Veldizen, 26, disappeared on Jan. 2, 2004. Three days later, her body was found near the home where she lived and worked.

She was last seen alive on a surveillance camera at a Publix supermarket on Palmetto Park Road.

Wiggins was reportedly in South Florida at the time and had recently been paroled. Police said he was working as a handyman in west Boca Raton. Local 10 has learned that Wiggins lived in a relative's apartment that was not far from where Rivera-Veldizen lived and worked.

Wiggins' Arrest In North Carolina

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officers arrested Wiggins at his mother's apartment in Charlotte. Police said he was trying to escape through a window when they arrested him. He is charged with rape, kidnapping, sexual assault and burglary.

Wiggins is accused of raping a Charlotte woman on Oct. 12. The alleged victim reportedly gave police a description that led them to Wiggins, and she also picked him out of a lineup.

Wiggins is also being held as a fugitive in the rape of a 14-year-old girl in Coral Springs, Fla. That girl was reportedly kidnapped, held overnight, and repeatedly raped.

Wiggins has not consented to a DNA sample yet, but investigators say that the test is just a formality.

Wiggins is currently being held in the Mecklenburg County Jail awaiting an extradition hearing.
