WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- Authorities say workers found a dead newborn baby on a moving conveyor belt at Palm Beach County's recycling center.
The workers found the naked infant Monday night as they were separating recyclables. Investigators are trying to find the mother.
Police detective Charles Reed estimated that the baby was between a day and a week old. Police have not yet determined the race or sex of the child.
Reed said the body was intact but, "not in the best of condition. It was mixed in with all the trash."
Local 10 News partner WPBF told Local 10 that a worker reportedly saw someone put the baby's body on one of the conveyor belts, but the child had already gone through two sorting processes by that time.
More than 3,000 tons of trash are dumped daily at the facility.
