BSO: Fourth-Grader Takes Gun, Empty Crack Bags To School

A loaded gun and bags usually used to hold crack cocaine were found in a fourth-grade student's backpack at a Lauderhill elementary school Tuesday, according to the Broward Sheriff's Office.

The student attends Royal Palm Elementary School.
Detectives think the young girl is a victim in the incident. Officials said when the student at Royal Palm Elementary School noticed a gun in her bag, she told her teacher she needed to talk to her mom. The teacher told her to sit down. When the student approached the teacher again and told her she needed to talk to her mom because there was a gun in her bag, the teacher checked, saw the weapon and called a school resource officer.

BSO officials said a loaded .380 automatic handgun, wrapped in plastic bags was stuffed in the child's backpack. Investigators also said they found empty bags that are commonly used to stash crack.

Do you feel your child is safe at school?

Investigators think someone at the child's home stashed the weapon and bags in her backpack without her knowledge. The child will not be charged with any crime.

BSO is investigating.
