Public Asked To Help In Nanny Murder Case

Investigators Try To Place Suspect In Boca Raton At Time Of Murder

POSTED: Tuesday, March 29, 2005

The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office Tuesday morning asked for the public's help in their investigation of the murder of a Boca Raton nanny.

Investigators are hoping that someone can help them place murder suspect Jerry Wiggins at the scene of the crime.

Wiggins was arrested in January in the rape of a Charlotte, N.C. woman. The woman picked Wiggins, who she knew as "Jay," out of a line-up.

Investigators said DNA from the Charlotte rape matched DNA in the murder of Monica Rivera-Veldizen. She disappeared from a Boca Raton Publix supermarket on West Palmetto Park Road Jan. 2, 2004. Her body was found Jan. 5 in bushes a short distance from the home where she was living and working.

Investigators said Wiggins kidnapped, raped and murdered Rivera-Veldizen.

The DNA from the North Carolina rape also matched DNA in the rape of a 14-year-old Coral Springs girl.

Wiggins has not consented to providing a DNA sample, but investigators said that is "just a formality."

Detectives said it is imperative that anyone who can place Wiggins in the Boca Raton area in January 2004 call investigators at 1 (800) 458-TIPS.
