DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla. -- Deerfield Beach is closed to swimmers because dozens of sharks are feeding very close to shore.
Hugh Graf of the Broward Sheriff's Office confirmed that the Coast Guard spotted more than 100 sharks off the beach Monday night. The sharks are swimming between the closest reef and the water's edge.
Lifeguards put warning flags up at about 9 a.m. Tuesday and called all bathers out of the water.
Lifeguard Capt. Lee Magnuson said, "They are predatory fish. To play it on the safe side, we're going to keep the bathers out of the water."
Sky 10 flew over the beach where many were enjoying the day on the sand, but only one person was seen swimming, and he was staying very close to shore.
The beach will remain closed as long as authorities consider the sharks to be a potential threat.
No swimmers will be let back into the water until 30 minutes after the last shark sighting. Considering the number of sharks that have grouped and are migrating up the coast that might not be for a few days.
