BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. -- Three racetracks and a jai-alai fronton have filed a lawsuit against the state attorney over the hold-up on getting slot machines at their facilities.

Hollywood Greyhound Track, Dania Jai-Alai, Pompano Park Racing and Gulfstream Park announced the request for "injunctive relief related to the Broward facilities' rights and abilities to install and operate slot machines."
"Our goal is to fulfill the intention of both the statewide and Broward voters who voted 'yes' (to) allowing slots gaming at pari-mutuel facilities," said Daniel Adkins, executive vice president of Hollywood Greyhound Track.
On March 8, voters in Broward County voted to allow slot machines following the passage of a statewide referendum so this type of gaming could take place at the county's pari-mutuel facilities.
When the bill that would allow the installation of slot machines stalled in the Florida Senate a few weeks back, Adkins said that the pari-mutuels would sue "on behalf of the people of Florida for their wishes to be, at least, implemented in some fashion."
But State Rep. Randy Johnson, who also heads an anti-gambling group, says they've filed their own lawsuit in Leon County.
"I think this is the appropriate venue and that's why we filed up here," Johnson said. "But we knew very well -- I knew very well -- that the slots industry was going to attempt to make a play in court to be able to set their own rules down in Broward County and that doesn't benefit the people of Florida."
Johnson says it's up to the legislature not the pari-mutuel industry to establish regulations for slot machines.
Gov. Bush agrees, saying state lawmakers should set the rules even if it requires a special session.
