Traffic Tickets Go High-Tech In Broward

New Device Saves Time For Officers, Drivers

POSTED: Thursday, May 26, 2005

The Broward Sheriff's Office has a new gadget they hope will help them catch more speeders, just in time for the Memorial Day weekend rush.

Deputies are using electronic devices known as PCs -- Pocket Citations -- to issue traffic tickets quicker and more efficiently.

The Pocket Citation can scan the magnetic strip on a driver's license and electronically enter the driver's name, address, and other information on the citation. The deputy then finishes the citation by choosing the appropriate vehicle information and traffic violation from drop-down menus on the PC.

When all the necessary information has been loaded into the PC, the deputy can print out the citation via a wireless connection to a small, rechargeable printer. The PC captures the drivers' names, addresses, types of citations, and when the shift is over, the deputy can download that information into a database file.

The PC is getting rave reviews from deputies, and they think even those being ticketed will appreciate it.

Broward Deputy Michael Fazio, said, "It's bad enough getting a ticket as it is but if you keep them there 10 minutes, it just stirs them up even more. So if we can get them on their way and get them back to where they need to."

The Broward Sheriff's Office purchased 62 of the Pocket Citation devices So far, 51 BSO motorcycle deputies throughout the county and seven BSO Highway Unit deputies are using the Pocket Citation.
