MIAMI -- A former chief with the Miami-Dade Fire-Rescue Department is under arrest, accused of stealing from a nonprofit charity.
Miami-Dade police said that Steven Douglas Lowe, 56, used money from the "Friends of the Burn Center, Inc.," for his personal use. Lowe was treasurer of the nonprofit charity from June 2000 to February 2003.
Investigators said Lowe used two credit cards belonging to the charity to make unauthorized purchases. They said Lowe also took a cash advance of $2,000 against one of the credit card accounts to obtain money for himself. Lowe would then pay the credit card charges with funds from the charity's checking account, according to investigators. They said Lowe also cashed two separate $3,000 checks from the charity's checking account to obtain money, which he also kept for himself.
Lowe is charged with grand theft, organized fraud, and petit theft.
Lowe was arrested Friday. He is being held in the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.
