BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. -- A Broward Sheriff's Office motorcycle deputy, who was recognized as a hero two years ago, was injured Friday morning when he was involved in an accident.

Deputy Donnie Jackson, 37, was riding northbound on the Florida Turnpike near the Interstate 75 crossover when he lost control of his motorcycle. At the time he said he was in pursuit of an erratic driver. Early in the day BSO had said another vehicle may have been involved in the accident and might have hit Jackson, but later officials said that was not the case.

He was treated for minor scrapes at the hospital.
Two years ago, Jackson was recognized as a hero after he dove into a murky canal to save the lives of two young children.
In August 2003, Jackson had finished an overnight shift in Tamarac and was on his way home when he saw a man, soaking wet, waving from the side of the turnpike near 152nd Street. Jackson stopped and the man told him that his two young sons were trapped in a car in a nearby canal.
Jackson dropped his gun belt, followed the tire tracks, and dove into the canal.
He found the submerged car and used his baton to shatter a window and pulled an 8-year-old boy and his 2-year-old brother from the car. Once he got the children to shore, Jackson performed CPR on the 2-year-old until the boy regained consciousness.
Jackson, who is married and a father himself, received numerous accolades and awards for his heroism.
The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating Friday's crash.
