BAL HARBOUR, Fla. -- An 84-year-old man out on the water with his son died Monday morning when their 16-foot boat capsized in rough seas off Bal Harbour.
Marine Patrol Officer Madelene Orr was able to save the man's 53-year-old son, but the father lost consciousness before she could get him aboard. He died at the hospital.
"It was very difficult because neither one of the parties had put a life preserver on," Orr said. "I was trying to control my boat in four- and five foot seas … I got a line to the son and turned the engines off so the son could come on the boat. And I just held the 84-year-old man up for his head to be out of the water."
A Haulover Beach lifeguard on a Jet Ski came alongside Orr's boat and helped pulled the elderly man out of the water.
The 53-year-old son was not injured.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission is investigating the incident.
