Miami-Dade County Katrina Concert Features Big Names

POSTED: Thursday, September 8, 2005

A relief concert to help victims of Hurricane Katrina, featuring some top-name performers, will be held at the American Airlines Arena.

Miami-Dade County Commission Chairman Joe A. Martinez and the Board of County Commissioners announced the concert Thursday, along with several South Florida companies and agencies.

The Miami-Dade County Relief Concert will be held on Sunday, Sept. 25 at 8 p.m., at the American Airlines Arena, 601 Biscayne Blvd., Miami.

Popular South Florida actor Andy Garcia and Emmy award-winning actress Debbie Allen will host the concert, which will include performances by: Arturo Sandoval, Ed Calle, Barry Gibb of the Bee Gees, Michael Bolton, Natalie Cole, Betty Wright, Willy Chirino, James Ingram, Vikki Carr, Jon Secada, Kim and Hill from New Orleans, Richard Clayderman and many more. Also participating will be "People's Court" Judge Marylin Milian, Y100.7 personality Footy and heavyweight boxer Shannon Briggs.

One of the highlights of the concert will be a performance of "The Motherland of Jazz," a relief anthem composed by jazz trumpeter Arturo Sandoval and arranged by international recording artist Ed Calle.

"I was inspired by all the images coming out of New Orleans," said Sandoval.

The event is being sponsored by Miami-Dade County, the Kiwanis of Little Havana, American Airlines, the city of Miami, Comcast, Creative Ideas Advertising, Siglo Music Group, Turi's Music Group, the Greater Miami Visitors and Convention Bureau, Cox Radio, Univision Radio, The Heat Group, Miami-Dade College and the Cuban-American Bar Association.

"This is a great showing of care and support for those in need. These performers are giving freely of their time and talent and companies are lending their resources to this very worthy cause," said Martinez. "With the proceeds we will first be taking care of those affected by Katrina locally in Miami-Dade County and then those in the state of Mississippi."
