Broward Slots Issue Up In Air -- Again

Representative Says Side Effects Of Slots Should Change Voters' Minds

Several times in recent months it has looked like slot machines in Broward County were a done-deal, but now it's clear once again the issue remains unsettled and contentious.

State lawmakers have introduced legislation that would allow voters to reverse themselves on the measure that cleared the way for Broward County to allow slots in pari-mutuel facilities.

Last November, Broward voters approved the addition of slot machines to four pari-mutuel facilities in the county.

State Rep. Randy Johnson says the issue needs to be revisited.

He said turning Broward's two horse tracks, one dog track and one jai-alai fronton into casinos would mean gridlock, street crime and zoning problems.

"Through the process of discovery, the people of Florida have begun to realize that all was not as advertised during the last discussion of the expansion of gambling in the state of Florida," said Johnson, R-Celebration.

Supporters say slots will create thousands of jobs and bring hundreds of millions of dollars annually into schools. Detractors insist slot machines won't necessarily help schools, and that additional gaming will spur social ills, plus hurt tourism.

Johnson presented a similar resolution last year that was shot down. The new resolution has "no chance whatsoever," said state Sen. Steven Geller, D-Hallandale Beach.

Dan Adkins, vice president of the Hollywood Greyhound Track and a leader in the 2004 slots initiative, said he wasn't surprised at the filing, but he said "voters have already addressed this issue."

Senate President Tom Lee said he would support Johnson's resolution, pointing to side effects from slot machines that would span the state.
