Police say a fight over a woman led to a shooting outside a Boca Raton synagogue during services at the start of the high holidays, Rosh Hashana.

Police say the shooter and the wounded man had both been attending services celebrating the Jewish New Year with about 200 worshippers at the synagogue before they argued.

Investigators said 79-year-old Marc Benayer shot Jonathan Samuels outside Chabad Weltman Synagogue.

Samuels, 44, is hospitalized in critical condition with two gunshot wounds. He is expected to recover.

"It was a panic everywhere because we didn't know what was happening -- if we were being attacked from outside or from inside. So everybody was trying to break window to get out of it," said Tamara Zilmet.

Investigators said that before last night's shooting, Samuels and Benayer had fought about a woman who once had a relationship with Benayer. The woman also worked in Samuels' electronics business.

Authorities say Samuels had helped the woman seek a restraining order against Benayer.

Benayer is charged with attempted murder and aggravated assault with a firearm.
