BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. -- Broward sheriff's detectives, who are investigating charges that Lionel Tate robbed a pizza deliveryman at gunpoint, have tracked down one of the guns they have been looking for.
The three handguns were reported missing from the home of Kathleen Grossett-Tate, a state trooper, a day after her son was charged with robbing a pizza deliveryman on May 23.
Detectives said they learned Thursday that one of the missing guns was actually in the possession of North Miami police, who had confiscated it during a traffic stop six months before the pizza incident.
Tate's attorney claims that police officers have connected the person in that traffic stop to one of Tate's neighbors.
One of the other guns was located last June. The third is still missing.
It's unclear if this will have any effect on the case against Tate.
Tate is facing life in prison if convicted on the new charges because it would be a probation violation.
Tate is on probation as part of a plea agreement after an appeals court overturned his initial conviction and life sentence in the 1999 killing of family friend Tiffany Eunick, 6.
Tate, who was 12 when the girl was killed, was the youngest person to that point sentenced to life in prison in modern American history. Tate first claimed that he accidentally killed Tiffany while imitating wrestlers he had seen on television.
