Wilma Won't Scare Trick-Or-Treaters Away

POSTED: Monday, October 31, 2005

Trick-or-treaters are finding ways to celebrate Halloween, despite disruptions caused by Hurricane Wilma.

The storm hit South Florida one week ago today, and remnants are still around.

Some city officials are encouraging residents to celebrate the holiday during the day, before curfews are in place, and inside, away from debris and downed power lines.

The city of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., sent out a notice asking residents to go out during daylight hours.

Many cities are canceling Halloween events, but numerous malls are inviting trick-or-treaters to go store-to-store rather than door-to-door.

Key West's annual Halloween celebration, Fantasy Fest, has been rescheduled for Dec. 7-11.

Speaking Of The Keys

The lower Keys, including Key West, are open to tourists today.

Only residents have been allowed in the Key West area since Hurricane Wilma hit Oct. 24.

Numerous traffic lights in the area are still out. Debris, toppled trees and downed power lines will make an obstacle course for motorists.

State officials have linked 21 deaths to Wilma. That does not include a 55-year-old man who was killed when a mechanical excavator he was using to clean up debris flipped over and knocked down an electrical transformer and power lines.

Sunday afternoon, the State Emergency Operations Center listed about 2,000 people in emergency shelters, most in Palm Beach and Broward counties.

Wilma was the eighth hurricane to strike or pass by Florida in 15 months.

School's Out For…

Not even Alice Cooper knows when schools will return to session.

Students across South Florida are out of school again today because of Wilma.

Public schools in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties are closed. Broward schools will also be closed tomorrow.

School officials there said electricity probably wouldn't be restored to the majority of district sites until later in the week. Administrators are also concerned about traffic safety and children going to and from schools.

Miami-Dade and Palm Beach County school officials will soon determine when their schools will open.

Many students in these counties have been out of school since last week.

In Monroe County, schools reopened today. Students there had been out of school since the Thursday before Wilma whipped the Keys.
