POSTED: Thursday, November 3, 2005
MIAMI -- A medical expert testified today that a 6-month-old baby fed only a raw food diet died of natural causes brought on by a compromised immune system.
Dr. John Marraccini is a former Palm Beach County medical examiner and Harvard University-trained forensics expert. He is being paid for his testimony in the manslaughter trial of the infant's parents.
He says the child's death was not the result of malnutrition.
Marraccini is the key expert for the defense in the trial of Joseph and Lamoy Andressohn. They face more than 17 years in prison each if convicted on charges of aggravated manslaughter and child neglect in the May 2003 death of their infant Woyah.
Prosecutors contend the infant died of complications from severe malnutrition because she was fed a diet of wheat grass, coconut water and almond milk.
The Andressohns four other children are currently living with a relative.
Joseph and Lamoy Andressohn are expected to take the stand to testify on their own behalfs.
