FHP: Racing Caused Crash That Injured Woman, 4 Teens

POSTED: Thursday, December 1, 2005

A woman and four teens were injured Wednesday night in a multi-vehicle accident that may have been caused by street racing, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Around 10:45 p.m., a Lexus and Volkswagen collided into slower traffic, tipping a sport utility vehicle onto its side and sending a Honda crashing into the backyard of a home off Southwest 8th Street near 102nd Avenue, FHP troopers said.

"I was watching the TV and I heard like a boom in the back of my house, and when I looked through the window I saw this car already there and people trying to get out from the car," said Armando Castro. "I noticed that the barbecue, the fence, the tree, everything was destroyed, totally destroyed. The car was right behind my house, right behind my patio next to the swimming pool."

A woman trapped inside the Honda was airlifted to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center, where she is listed in serious but stable condition.

Four teenagers from Our Lady of Lourdes Academy who were riding in the SUV were also taken to area hospitals to be treated for minor injuries.

Daniel Quintana, 22, and Flavio Lop, 18, have been charged with aggressive and careless driving. Troopers said they were driving their vehicles at a high rate of speed and caused the crash.
