3 Homeless Men Beaten, 1 Fatally

Police Believe Incidents Could Be Related

Fort Lauderdale police are investigating a series of brutal beatings that killed one homeless man and seriously injured another two between 1 a.m. and 4 a.m. Thursday.

The first beating was captured by surveillance video on Florida Atlantic University's downtown Fort Lauderdale campus. The video shows two teenage-looking males using baseball bats to beat the man.

He was able to flag down a security guard after the beating and was taken to the hospital.

The second beating happened about an hour later outside of the Broward Center for the Performing Arts. Norris Gaynor, 45, died later at the hospital.

The final beating occurred near the Church By the Sea. That man was able to flag down a firefighter afterwards and was taken to the hospital.

"There was no discussion, no conflict prior to the attack," Fort Lauderdale police spokeswoman Katherine Collins said. "It just appears that they were beaten for whatever reason."

Police believe the incidents might be related.

"Although we cannot say for certain that they are related, the similarities are very apparent," Collins said.

Police are speaking with members of the homeless community to find out why the men might have been beaten. They are also asking for the public's assistance in identifying the suspects caught on the surveillance video.

Anyone with information about the beatings is asked to call Broward Crime Stoppers at (954) 493-TIPS.
