A domestic disturbance call in Nassau County overnight prompted a police pursuit that ended with a deputy shot and the suspect killing himself, authorities said.

According to officials, deputies responded to the call of shots fired in a dispute at the Cato Mobile Home Park in Nassau County at 3:30 a.m. Monday, but the suspect took off.

Deputies pursued him through Callahan, into Duval County, then back to Callahan. At that point, Nassau County sheriff's Deputy Jared Witkowski was shot in the leg during an exchange of gunfire.

Deputies from Nassau and Duval counties were involved in the pursuit. After the incident, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement assumed control of the investigation.

Several bullet holes and a busted window were visible as the suspect's pickup truck was towed away from New Kings Road.
New Kings Road was closed for about two hours due to police activity. After the suspect's pickup truck was towed off and the medical examiner left the scene, the road reopened to traffic.

Witkowski was reported in stable condition at Shands-Jacksonville Medical Center.

"He's doing fine. I told him I appreciated the job he was doing for the community," Nassau County Sheriff Tommy Seagraves said. "It was a pretty scary situation."

It's uncertain if the suspect was wounded in the shootout with Nassau deputies in Callahan, but several bullet hole could be seen in his pickup. A Jacksonville Sheriff's Office spokesman says no shots were fired where the pickup truck was found.

Steven Cox
Channel 4 learned that the man found dead in a pickup truck on New Kings Road before dawn Monday was Steven Cox.
Channel 4 has learned that suspect was Steven Cox, 47. Police searched his home on Marlee Road on Jacksonville's Westside before dawn, coming away with three hunting rifles, two BB guns and two old blasting caps.

Residents on his street described Cox as "a tense person," but added they were not sure what would set him off or cause him to shoot a deputy. Some said Cox was involved in land disputes with his neighbors; some said they were afraid of him.

At noon Monday, the Nassau County patrol car remained at the Callahan scene, where deputies and FDLE agents recovered what appeared to be dozens of bullet casings.
