FDA Approves Experimental Gene Therapy
Procedure Could Help People With Canavan Disease
After a long battle, the Food and Drug Administration approved an experimental gene therapy that may save the lives of people with Canavan disease.
For years Channel 10 has followed the story of Nicholas Breedon, who was born with the genetic disorder. Most people who have Canavan disease don't live past the age of 10.
The news Tuesday from the FDA could give Nicholas and other kids like him a chance at a better life.
Nicholas' mother Brenda joined other families in Washington, D.C. last month to plead for federal funding for Canavan research. The first children are expected to undergo the gene therapy in May.
