Teen Says Frisking Turned Into Assault
POSTED: Tuesday, January 24, 2006
BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. -- A trial is under way in the case of a university police officer accused of sexually assaulting a woman.
Investigators said an 18-year-old woman and her boyfriend were sitting in a parked car off campus at 11201 S.W. 24 St. on July 8, 2005 when they were approached by 35-year-old Frederick Eugene Currie.
Currie, an on-duty Florida International University police officer, conducted a check of the vehicle. Investigators said Currie ordered the couple, who were partially undressed and intimately involved, to get out of the car.
The couple said Currie said he had to "frisk them" as part of police procedure. The woman said that out of the sight of her boyfriend, the pat-down turned into a sexual assault. The couple called the police after the incident.
Miami-Dade Police Department's Sexual Crimes Bureau investigated the alleged assault. Currie was arrested on July 20. He is charged with sexual battery and battery.
Currie's defense attorney said that lack of physical evidence will prove that his client is not guilty. He said "not one cell" of Currie's was found on clothing or Currie's hands, supporting his claim of innocence
Police records show that Currie has been arrested but not convicted three times during the past 10 years on domestic violence charges.
Testimony in the trial continues Wednesday.
