Immigration Deadline Catches Some Off Guard
Many Rush To Get Married
Monday is the deadline for illegal immigrants trying to apply for visas to stay in the United States.
As the clock ticks down, many immigrants are saying "I do." Marrying an American citizen is the easiest way for them to get a green card.
"I'm mostly getting married because I'm in love, but I also want her to be a U.S. citizen," said one newlywed (pictured, right).
Immigrants can also receive residency status if they are sponsored by a U.S. business.
For Juan and Mayra Gonzalez (pictured, below) the change in the law could mean that the 16-year residents could be sent back to Guatemala, despite the fact that their four children were born in the United States.

"This is so hard for my family. This (could) destroy my family," Mayra said.
The Gonzalez family missed a key filing deadline, unaware that immigration law had changed six times since they arrived in the states.
Michael Maggio, an immigrationg lawyer, says that immigration law can be very confusing.
"Immmigration law is a trip to wonderland without Alice. And even those of us who live and breathe this 24 hours a day are baffled on a regular basis," Maggio said.
Those who miss Monday's deadline risk arrest and deportation.
