Boaters Injured Using GPS Incorrectly, Coast Guard Says
Wellcraft Goes On Wrong Side Of Buoy Near Government Cut

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. -- The U.S. Coast Guard said it was a lack of boating experience that sent two boaters to the hospital Thursday night.
Four men were on board a Wellcraft when it crashed into a jetty just north of the entrance to Government Cut, Coast Guard Petty Officer Jason Garcia said.
"They were using the GPS (global positioning system) the wrong way," Garcia said. "They were supposed to go outside the buoy. They came inside, putting them up against the jetties."
A good Samaritan witnessed the accident and called the Coast Guard, which arrived within minutes.
"As we pulled up we seen two of the passengers on their boat banged up and bloody," Garcia said. "One gentleman had lacerations on his forehead. Another gentleman was bleeding severely out of his eye."
Because the Miami Beach Fire Department could not bring their stretchers onto the jetty, Garcia said, the men were brought to the Coast Guard station near the McArthur Causeway, where an ambulance was waiting to take them to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center.
The Wellcraft was eventually towed to shore. A cracked captain's chair, smashed windshield and bloodstains documented the severity of the accident.
Both men were listed in stable condition Friday morning.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and the Miami-Dade Police Department are investigating the accident.
