University Of Miami Janitors Get 25 Percent Pay Increase
Janitors Will Continue To Strike For Right To Join Union
POSTED: Friday, March 17, 2006
MIAMI -- After three weeks of protests over low pay wages, janitors at the University of Miami are finally getting what they wanted.
University of Miami President Donna Shalala and the board of trustees voted Thursday to raise the minimum wages of its contract employees, including striking janitors and groundskeepers, by at least 25 percent. The new policy will apply to about 900 workers.
The announcement was made on the same day janitors took their protest to Palm Island, where Gloria Estefan and other celebrities make their homes.
Estefan is on the board of trustees of the university. The workers took their complaints to the homes of several UM trustees, including Estefan. Some of those homes are worth more than $40 million.
The current hourly base pay is $6.40. The new hourly minimum will be $8 for food service workers; $8.55 for housekeepers; and $9.30 for landscapers.
Compensation will also be adjusted for years on the job and merit. In addition, health care benefits will also be offered.
But union leaders said the strike over unfair labor practices would continue.
The Unicco Service workers still want to join the Service Employees International Union.
