South Florida Intersection Tops Most Dangerous List
Flamingo Road, Pines Boulevard Scene of 357 Accidents Last Year
PEMBROKE PINES, Fla. -- The nation's largest insurance company is confirming what many local drivers already know -- South Florida roads can be dangerous.
State Farm Insurance ranked Pines Boulevard and Flamingo Road in Pembroke Pines as the most dangerous intersection in the country. Nearly 90,000 cars pass through the intersection.
"There (are) always a lot of accidents here. There's a lot of traffic and a lot of people live out this way and go to the mall," Elaine Roberts said.
The intersection, which is surrounded by three malls and the popular C.B. Smith Park, was the scene of 357 accidents last year.
Some of the dangers commuters face at the intersection are drivers running lights, poor lighting at the intersection and road stripes that are hard to see.

State Farm is giving Pembroke Pines $1 million to improve safety at the intersection.
Company officials wanted to assure customers who drive through the intersection that they don't have to worry about their insurance rates going up. They base rates on areas, not intersections.
