Plea Deal Increases Chances Woman Won't Be Deported

BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. -- A Haitian woman who brought a human skull into the country in her luggage pleaded guilty Wednesday in federal court to illegally storing human remains.
Myrlene Severe now faces a maximum sentence of one year in jail.
Severe told authorities she got the package from a man in Haiti to ward off evil spirits, as part of her Voodoo beliefs.
A federal judge approved the plea deal Wednesday, allowing Severe to plead guilty to a misdemeanor state charge. If she had been arraigned on federal charges, she could have been sentenced to up to 15 years in prison.
Her lawyer said under the state charge, Severe will stand a better chance of not being deported.
Severe, who lives in Miramar, is a Haitian national who has permanent residency status in the U.S. Her attorney said she is seeking citizenship.
