Crane Accident: Son Left Dangling As Father Falls To Death
Man Falls 39 Stories Along With Piece Of Crane
POSTED: Tuesday, April 18, 2006
MIAMI -- A construction worker died Tuesday after falling 39 stories while working on a condominium in downtown Miami.
The man who fell, 47-year-old Jesse Morris, was working in the same area of the project as his son, 20-year-old Jesse Morris Jr. The son was left dangling in his safety harness as his father fell to his death.
Authorities said workers were attempting to secure a crane to the future Marina Blue building when a piece came crashing down. Miami fire-rescue spokesman Ignatius Carroll said Jesse Morris Sr. was on that piece.
Jesse Morris Jr. was rescued from his safety harness. He was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center in stable condition. Both men were from Douglasville, Ga.
Police and fire-rescue officials shut down an area around the building because they were worried about the crane's stability.
Police said the area of Biscayne Boulevard near where the accident occurred was closed for most of the day while workers checked to make sure the rest of the crane was secure.
Marina Blue is a 60-story, 516-unit condominium across from the American Airlines Arena overlooking Biscayne Bay. Construction is expected to be completed next year.
