Judge Refuses Bail For Lionel Tate

POSTED: Thursday, June 23, 2005

A Broward County Judge is refusing to release Lionel Tate on bond after hearing new evidence linking him to the armed robbery of a pizza deliveryman.

Detectives say a series of cell phone text messages between Tate and a 16-year-old boy show them plotting a robbery. The boy is identified as Willie Caruthers and has denied involvement in the robbery.

Police say one text message says, "You still want to bust that lick after school?" A detective says "lick" is a street term for an armed robbery.

Tate will continue to be held without bond until an Aug. 8 hearing. The 18-year-old is on probation as part of a plea agreement after an appeals court overturned his initial conviction and life sentence in the 1999 killing of a 6-year-old girl. Tate was 12 at the time.
