Lionel Tate In Trouble Again For Incident In Jail

Deputies Say Tate Broke Window In Cell Door

POSTED: Tuesday, October 4, 2005
UPDATED: 1:17 pm EDT October 4,2005

Admitted child killer Lionel Tate has been charged with criminal mischief after a sheriff's deputy said the 18-year-old broke the glass in his cell door.

Tate has been in the Broward County Jail since May awaiting a probation hearing for allegedly robbing a pizza deliveryman.

Prosecutors filed the new charges Friday.

According to court records, Tate was shouting at deputies on Aug. 25 while "banging on the cell door glass window ... for approximately 30 to 45 seconds."

A detention deputy said that he used an intercom to tell Tate to stop kicking his door. The deputy said that Tate responded with swearing and slurs.

The written report indicated that a second deputy went to Tate's cell to give him dinner, and found the window of the cell door broken. Since Tate resides in the cell alone, the deputy concluded that Tate had broken the glass.

When Tate was read his rights, the deputy says that Tate said, "I only tapped on the glass to get the deputies attention."

Tate faces a potential life sentence on the robbery charge because he is on probation as part of a plea agreement in the 1999 killing of six-year-old family friend Tiffany Eunick.

Tate was the youngest person sentenced to life in modern U.S. history when he was convicted in the case. But the first-degree murder conviction and sentence were reversed on appeal.
