Miami-Dade Fire Gets New Equipment To Save Pets
POSTED: Friday, April 28, 2006
MIAMI -- The Miami-Dade Fire Department is now better equipped to save the lives of pets that have been overcome by smoke during a fire.
Friday, Miami Dade Fire Chief Herminio Lorenzo and County Commissioner Sally Heyman announced the addition of pet oxygen masks that will be on board every rescue unit throughout the county.
"Many families in this community have pets in their households who may suffer from smoke inhalation during a fire," said Lorenzo. "Until now, our firefighters and paramedics weren't equipped to provide proper oxygen assistance to pets."
The masks -- which function like the ones used by humans -- can provide oxygen to dogs and cats that have suffered from smoke inhalation during a fire. They are specially designed to fit over an animal's snout and they come in three different sizes.
"Our professional fire fighters and rescue personnel now have yet another tool to save lives," Heyman said. "With a large domestic animal population, this is a valuable addition for all units."
