Woman Gets $1.27 Million For Maggot-Infested Leg That Had To Be Amputated

POSTED: Thursday, May 11, 2006

A West Palm Beach woman will get $1.27 million after part of her leg had to be amputated because it was infected with maggots following surgery.

A jury ruled Tuesday that staff at Renova Health Center neglected to treat one of Mary Stewart's wounds.

Stewart, 72, said a nursing home doctor discovered hundreds of maggots in the wound 18 days after her surgery at Renova. Her leg was so infected it had to be amputated below her knee.

Stewart had surgery on her left foot because she suffers from gangrene and doctors were attempting to restore blood flow to her left foot.

An attorney for Renova said that even though nurses tended to the wound, "rotting flesh attracted some flies."

Stewart said she's pleased with the ruling.
