HOMESTEAD, Fla. -- The fight over citrus canker will move to an appeals court on Monday.
Canker is rarely fatal to trees, but some say it could kill Florida's $9 billion citrus industry because it leads to deformed fruit and smaller yields.
The judges will decide if the state can cut all trees within 1,900 feet of an infected tree or if a less drastic method should be employed.
Some experts say that the state's policy has been proven right.
"When you go back, it seems to me that the majority of cases those trees that were prevented from being cut because they were just exposed are now positive," tropical fruit specialist Jonathon Crane said.
The issue before the court is whether the canker epidemic constitutes an emergency.
