HOLLYWOOD, Fla. -- A 6-month-old Great Dane was released from an animal hospital Wednesday into a foster home to continue his recovery.
After Local 10 told the story of the puppy who survived being shot four times, calls have come in from as far away as Georgia and California from people who want to adopt him.
The puppy, named BJ by his rescuers, is recovering at a Hollywood animal hospital. He was shot in the jaw, forehead, front paw and hindquarters.
A volunteer from Miami animal rescue first spotted the puppy near Clewiston on June 15. The volunteer took the puppy to the animal hospital where he has undergone surgery three times to treat his severe wounds, including the removal of some jawbone that was destroyed by the shooting. He is expected to have two more surgical procedures, but Dr. James Dee, the veterinarian treating the dog, said BJ is eating and gaining weight.
BJ won't be ready for adoption for at least 12 weeks.
The animal rescuers are still hoping to find out who injured the dog.
Florida law makes it a third-degree felony to intentionally hurt an animal.
